Normally yes: IVTM is the municipal road tax, subject to applicable exemptions. Its amount depends on the municipality and vehicle characteristics. It is separate from IEDMT registration tax.

Non-residence alone does not determine whether the file is acceptable. You must satisfy the applicable identification, NIE, address, ownership, technical and tax requirements. Check your documents before buying or applying.

Buying and registration are separate steps. Before paying, confirm the documents and address needed, check the vehicle and establish whether it requires ownership transfer or first Spanish registration.

Buying checklist

Qualifying temporary visitors may have a six-month temporary-use allowance subject to customs and other conditions. It is not a general allowance for residents. Permanent use and residence transfers require a separate review of registration and tax deadlines.

UK vehicle guide

A duplicate COC, ficha reducida or another homologation procedure may be appropriate. The vehicle’s approval, origin and modifications determine the route.

Technical documents

For the normal foreign-vehicle registration route, you need the applicable Spanish ITV process and card. Confirm the registration inspection and documents before booking.

Residence-transfer guide

Not normally solely because it comes from mainland Spain. Permanent entry into Tenerife can still require a declaration and Canarian tax procedures, plus relevant address updates.

An open file does not itself authorise driving. Check the validity of registration or a temporary permit, insurance and inspection status. Vehicle transport may be needed.

Use the appropriate DGT vehicle report to review the Spanish register, including available administrative and inspection information. It does not replace a mechanical inspection or foreign records.
