Do foreign cars need Spanish ITV?
For the normal foreign-vehicle registration route, you need the applicable Spanish ITV process and card. This is not simply a routine periodic inspection booking. Tell the station that the vehicle is being prepared for Spanish registration and confirm the documents required for that procedure.
Prepare the file before the appointment
- Original registration documents and matching VIN.
- Accepted technical evidence for the applicable approval route.
- Documents for modifications or adaptations where required.
- Ownership and customs information if the procedure requires it.
A foreign inspection certificate can be relevant evidence, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the Spanish registration inspection and card.
Physical preparation
Check lights, tyres, brakes, warning lamps, windscreen and readable identification markings. Declare modifications such as suspension changes, tow bars, non-standard wheels or camper conversions before the appointment. Passing a roadworthiness test abroad does not guarantee that undocumented modifications are acceptable for Spanish registration.
COC, ficha reducida or another route?
A COC and a ficha reducida serve different purposes. The correct route depends on the vehicle’s approval and available evidence. A ficha reducida describes technical characteristics; it does not automatically legalise reforms or replace an individual approval when that is required.
What if the inspection is unsuccessful?
Read the written report and resolve the stated defects or document deficiencies before returning. The report’s result determines the permitted movement: an unfavourable inspection restricts use to the legally permitted repair/reinspection journeys, while a negative result requires transport by external means. Do not treat every failed result as permission to drive home normally.
Costs and timing
The station’s inspection charge, transport, repeat inspections, technical documents and repairs are separate costs. Appointment availability and any required corrections affect the timetable. We review the file first and explain the preparation and transport needs before arranging the next step.
