If you've asked around about registering an imported car in Tenerife, you've probably heard the term "Ficha Reducida" — usually said with a slight wince, like it's extra paperwork you didn't budget for. It isn't complicated once you know what it's actually for.
What a Ficha Reducida actually is
Every vehicle registered in Spain needs a technical data sheet on file — details like emissions, weight, dimensions and engine specs that the DGT and ITV use to confirm the vehicle meets Spanish requirements. If your car has a European Certificate of Conformity (COC), that document already contains everything needed, and there's nothing extra to prepare.
A Ficha Reducida is the substitute for vehicles that don't have a COC. It's a reduced technical sheet, built from an individual technical inspection of your specific vehicle rather than pulled from a manufacturer's standard certificate.
When you need one instead of a COC
The most common cases: vehicles imported from outside the EU, older vehicles from before COCs were standard practice, vehicles that have been modified from their original factory specification, or cases where the COC has simply been lost and can't be requested again from the manufacturer.
What the process involves
The vehicle goes through an individual technical inspection — more detailed than a routine ITV check — where an engineer records its actual specifications rather than relying on a manufacturer's paperwork. Those findings become the Ficha Reducida, which then goes into the same registration file as everything else: customs clearance, the standard ITV pass, and the final DGT submission.
How long it takes
Expect this step to add time compared to a straightforward COC case — an individual technical inspection isn't something that happens same-day. It's still a routine, well-understood process, not a red flag or a sign something's wrong with the vehicle.
