Can a non-resident buy a car?
Buying a car and obtaining its Spanish registration are separate questions. Non-resident status alone does not answer whether a particular registration or transfer file is complete. Before paying, confirm the identification, NIE, acceptable Spanish address and tax evidence needed for your transaction. A NIE is an identification number, not a residence permit.
Already Spanish-registered or foreign-plated?
A Spanish-registered used car normally needs a change of ownership, rather than first registration. A foreign-plated vehicle still needs its technical, tax and registration route checked. A seller’s promise that Spanish plates are easy is not evidence that the car meets the requirements.
Check the car before paying
- Compare the VIN on the car with the original documents.
- Confirm who can legally sell it and whether the seller matches the documentation.
- For a Spanish-registered car, obtain the appropriate DGT report and review any restrictions, charges and ITV history.
- Check inspection status, modifications and the physical condition independently.
- Agree who pays transaction taxes, transfer charges and any outstanding work.
A DGT report is useful for the Spanish register. It does not replace a mechanical inspection or the appropriate foreign records for a car that has not been registered in Spain.
Write the agreement clearly
Record the buyer, seller, vehicle identity, price, date and time, and signatures. Retain the invoice or contract and payment evidence. Review the tax treatment of a private purchase versus a dealer purchase rather than applying one rule to every sale.
Transfer and insurance
DGT states that the buyer must request the change of ownership within 30 days of the sale. Confirm that administrative restrictions and the relevant tax obligations have been resolved. Arrange suitable insurance before driving; buying the car does not automatically transfer the seller’s insurance cover.
When to contact us
For a foreign-plated car, send the registration and technical documents before committing to purchase. For a car already in the Spanish register, check the transfer route and DGT report. We can explain which registration steps apply and whether additional technical or customs work is needed.
