Visitor or permanent move?
First establish whether this is a temporary visit or permanent use in Tenerife. Temporary admission may permit a qualifying visitor to use a vehicle for up to six months subject to its conditions. That is not a universal allowance for residents. Residence, customs status, registration and insurance must all be considered.
The permanent registration route
Vehicles arriving from Great Britain after 1 January 2021 normally follow the non-EU route. DGT identifies separate treatment for Northern Ireland and for vehicles whose Union status is certified by AEAT; check the actual origin and status before choosing the procedure. Customs clearance and Canarian tax procedures come alongside the technical and DGT steps. A UK number plate or place of purchase does not itself prove preferential customs origin; do not assume duty-free treatment without the necessary evidence.
Documents to prepare
- V5C and any additional ownership evidence, such as an invoice or signed purchase contract.
- Passport or European national ID, plus NIE and address evidence where required.
- COC or manufacturer technical information, VIN and approval-plate photographs.
- Arrival/customs documents and residence-transfer evidence if applicable.
The V5C identifies the registered keeper; it is not by itself proof of ownership. Follow DVLA’s permanent-export instructions and retain the documents needed for registration abroad.
Right-hand drive and technical approval
A right-hand-drive layout does not by itself settle eligibility. Lighting, speed indication, approval data, emissions and any modifications need review for the specific vehicle. Do not order replacement parts or assume a ficha reducida will solve everything before checking the technical route.
Which deadline applies?
Visitor temporary admission, DVLA export reporting and Spanish registration-tax rules are different clocks. The UK’s 12-month export reporting threshold is not permission to keep a UK car in Spain for 12 months. For permanent use, check the registration obligations promptly; eligible residence transfers may have their own tax deadlines.
Before using the car during the process
Check that the registration or temporary permit, insurance and roadworthiness status permit the intended journey. Where they do not, arrange vehicle transport. An appointment booking or open registration file does not by itself authorise driving.
